Inshore Fishing in Choctawhatchee Bay

Each year thousands of people flock to the Emerald Coast. Some come for a relaxing time on the sandy beaches, and others come for the world-class fishing around Choctawhatchee Bay. Choctawhatchee Bay lies north of Destin and stretches over 130 square miles. The Bay is bordered by the Santa Rosa Sound on the west and the Choctawhatchee River to the east. This area includes a complex network of marshes, coves, bayous, rivers, flats, reefs and oyster beds. What makes the bay special is that it’s an inlet of the Gulf of Mexico and connects all the way to Destin Pass. The tides push water, which include baitfish and crabs, from the Gulf to the Bay and the other way around. This gives our area an advantage over other destinations on the Gulf Coast.

Speckled Trout, Black Drum, Redfish, Flounder and Sheephead are the primary fish types that you will see out in the water. Speckled Trout and Redfish are the most popular and common fish you’ll catch. Redfish are big and strong, and they will put up quite a fight. They’re first-rate gamefish and make a great meal. They’re not only tasty but they’re also a beautiful looking fish, their red scales almost turn gold in the sunlight. Redfish swim close to the shallow flats and are most plentiful in the eastern corner of the Bay, near the mouth of the Choctawhatchee Bay.

Speckled Trout is another popular fish among anglers in the area, and easier to catch. Speckled Trout make their home around the Bay stretching east near the marshes of the mouth of the Choctawhatchee River, down towards Hogtown Bayou and then west to Destin. They tend to stay in shallow water and swim in schools.

As summer is upon us, a lot of people head out to catch Red Snapper out in the Gulf of Mexico. Let them go. That just means there’s more water open to you on the Bay. In fact, this is the best time of the year to explore our waters. If you want light tackle action at its best, head to the east part of the Bay.
